
Intervention Counselor
LPS is seeking a successful Intervention Counselor for a dynamic position at an urban, charter high school in the Bay Area. The Intervention Counselor is a key member
of the school's leadership team, serving on the administrative cabinet, designing educational interventions to support and ensure the success of academically struggling students.
The mission of Leadership Public Schools is to prepare students to succeed in college and to develop effective student leaders. Our College Park , Oakland campus is seeking a dynamic and motivated individual to provide interventions to support students who are struggling academically.
Responsibilities:
Provide direct services through individual student services, preventive and responsive services as well as work collaboratively with the Dean of Student Life, College Counselor and Principal to foster e ducation as a successful experience for all students. Provide assistance and advocacy for students in overcoming the social and emotional problems that interfere with adjustment and achievement in high school. C reate a safe environment for individuals and peer groups to address problems. A ssist school staff in listening and respecting the feelings and sensitivities of students and parents from many cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Support the academic mission of the school and focus on 100% college attendance.
Student Services
- Assists all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic and personal/social skills, goals and plans
- Conducts counseling sessions in response to identified needs of individuals and groups of students through individual counseling, crisis intervention and the formation and facilitation of groups
- Counsels on various student issues: poor performance, advocacy, mediation of teacher-student differences, personal problems and concerns (i.e. family issues, abuse, pregnancy, depression, substance abuse, relationships, peer group issues)
- Responds to crisis situations to include altercations, illness/death, suspected child abuse and mandatory reporting of same
- Provides the necessary professional skills to assist students and communities in safe and healthy problem solving and conflict resolution.
Preventive and Responsive Services
- Provides individual and group counseling to students with identified concerns and needs
- Consults and collaborates effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators and other educational/community resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs.
- Implements an effective referral and follow-up process, maintaining community resources list
- Accurately and appropriately uses assessment procedures for determining and structuring individual and group counseling services
- Maintains records to document interactions, interventions, and decisions along with records based on ethical and legal guidelines
- Conducts or provides opportunities for parent education programs
- Work with students and families to develop support for intervention program and student buy-in
Collaboration
- Monitors student academic performance, behavior and attendance and assists with appropriate interventions
- Consults with and serves as a resource for teachers, staff, and parents regarding the developmental needs of students
- Conducts and facilitates conferences and in-service programs
- Consults and coordinates with community social service agencies
- Fosters links between college admission student services and campus life
- Works with school staff to determine appropriate student placement, e.g., education, English Language Learners, special programs, and occupational opportunities
- Coordinates academic interventions for struggling students to improve progress towards high school graduation and college attendance
- Works with Dean and teachers to develop curriculum for tutoring program
- Attends and providers leadership at Student Study Team meetings as appropriate
- Collaborates with tutors and academic volunteers
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of counseling techniques, strategies and parenting skills
- Knowledge of classroom instructional interventions and behavioral management techniques
- Successful participant in Student Study Teams and the IEP team process
- Knowledge of resources and agencies providing services to students
- Understanding of cultural diversity and experience with diverse youth in an urban area
- Ability to effectively provide individual and group counseling; provide staff development activities on pertinent topics of special interest;
- Effective communication with students, parents, teachers, administrators, community, staff, etc
- Creative and effective problem solving skills
- Successful conflict resolution experience
- Understanding of the psychosocial development of children and the influences of family, community, and cultural differences as they interact with the educational process
- Bilingual (English/Spanish); Spanish fluency highly desirable
- Teaching experience highly desirable
- Experience in the secondary education
