New Principal at LPS-Hayward

We are delighted to have had Lauren Klaffky join LPS this year as the Principal of LPS-Hayward. A passionate advocate of improving the college-going rate of educationally disadvantaged students, she brings tremendous experience and expertise to her new position. It's a busy time of year, but she took a few moments to share her thoughts on joining LPS.

Why did you choose to join LPS?
I have been working in education for over 10 years with a singular focus on increasing the number of underrepresented students who are prepared for, enroll in, and graduate from 4-year universities. When I learned about the mission of LPS, I knew that this was the organization that I wanted to be a part of.

What do you think makes the LPS curriculum special?
What makes LPS special are the educators who work here. Everyone takes student success personally, asking what they can do to help their students do better. Our teachers hold themselves to the highest expectations. They work tirelessly to ensure that our curriculum is focused solely on rigorous standards and the most effective engaging instruction so that students are successful. Our teachers regularly evaluate student performance and student work so that they can adjust their instruction and build a strong professional learning community. We are a truly dynamic school that is responsive to student needs and that shows in our results. The LPS-Hayward API Score of 777 significantly outpaces the state and we had a 20% jump in the number of advanced-level Algebra students after a year of intense innovation in their curriculum.

What are your goals for your students?
My goal for my students is simple. I want all of them to reach the pinnacle of success: entrance into and success in a four-year university so that they are prepared to return to the Hayward community as leaders and mentors for the next generation of LPS students.
