LPS-San Jose Students Put Leadership into Action

LPS-San Jose students, teachers, friends, and family gathered in September to support local volunteer efforts for International Coastal Cleanup Day. The students were participating in a “Living Leadership Initiative” organized by the LPS-San Jose Martial Arts Club and led by club sponsor Master Greg D. Garcia of the Academy of Martial Philosophy. “Living Leadership Initiatives” are project-based leadership opportunities designed to bring LPS-San Jose students outside of school to make a difference in their community. Students have also organized a recent collection for victims of the flooding in the Philippines and will be participating in an upcoming initiative connected with Project Linus, a group that provides warm blankets to needy children.

The LPS-San Jose martial arts club is founded in the principals of Penn's Live Like A Champion Project, a select group of 300 martial arts instructors from 300 cities around the world who are all working towards positive change. The program advocates a practical and relevant sense of self-defense, founded on the understanding that students will face many more mental and emotional challenges in their lives than physical. LPS-San Jose students receive high-quality self-defense training, as well as participate in learning opportunities that promote perseverance through adversity, life mastery skills, peace education, anger management, healthy living, and community building. The goal is for the students to transform themselves and then reach out to others to make a difference.

Thanks to the generous support of LPS supporters, twenty LPS-San Jose students and teachers will be able to participate in the Live Like a Champion Project this year. This is one of many ways LPS is fulfilling its mission of developing our students into effective community leaders.
