LPS Annual Enrichment Fund

Technology Initiative

The Educational testing service conducted research on the impact of technology in an eighth grade math classroom. This study discovered that when computers were used to apply higher-order thinking concepts in math, and when teachers received sufficient professional development on computers, eighth-graders gained a one-third grade level increase. When deployed appropriately, technology can change the way students think and learn, and thus, revolutionize education.

CEO Forum on Education and Technology, 2001

Every student needs the ability to navigate through the information flow that today connects the global community. For students to thrive in a world enabled by information technology, we must give them the skills to make sense of and use the information that engulfs them. They need to know how to learn new skills as quickly as technology creates new challenges.

The "digital divide" is a reality, especially among traditionally underserved student populations. LPS bridges that divide by requiring its students to master not only core academic subjects, but also 21st century skills and content. These 21st century skills include information and communications technology literacy skills vital for success in the global digital economy.

However, LPS's new schools still lack sufficient hardware and software. We need your help. And, of course, there is more to educational technology than desktop computers. Used wisely, technology offers a powerful arsenal of tools to improve student achievement and promote critical thinking. Teachers and students need access to laptops and Smart boards, LCD projectors, digital cameras and microscopes, web-based video equipment, and graphing calculators. They need to become responsible and savvy users and purveyors of information. They need to know how to collaborate successfully across miles and cultures.

Your support of the LPS Technology Initiative helps each school.
