Our Oakland campus opened in 2005 and will expand to serve grades 9 through 12 in 2008-09. We offer:

  • Tuition-free public charter high school
  • College preparatory curriculum
  • Small and safe learning environment
  • Innovative leadership curriculum, including a three day Leadership Retreat at Stanford
  • Highly qualified teaching staff and school leadership

LOCATION

Our students have the best of both worlds -- a small school program with access to the facilities of a larger high school. We're located in Building 100 at the former Castlemont High School.

ENROLLMENT

Enrollment for the 2008-09 school year is open to all 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade students. We do not charge tuition. Please call 510-633-0750 for more information.

In order to apply, each student and a parent/guardian must complete an application (English or Spanish) and attend an information session. Please join us for enrollment information sessions on the following dates. All meetings take place at our campus at the address below.

PRINCIPAL ANDREW GORDON

Mr. Gordon is Principal of LPS Oakland and brings a wealth of experience as an instructor and principal. He is a resident of Oakland, and has served as an educator for the last sixteen years, in New York, Hayward and in Oakland. His career has been devoted to developing and implementing systems that promote equity, high expectations and academic excellence for all students. Mr. Gordon most recently served as the principal of Bret Harte Middle School in Hayward. Under his leadership, the school's similar school ranking grew from 1 to 6 in two years and the API grew almost 70 points.

Mr. Gordon earned his Bachelor's degree in African/African-American Studies from Carleton College in Minnesota, his Master's in Educational Leadership from California State University, East Bay, and is the process of beginning his doctoral study at CSUEB. Mr. Gordon is excited to lead LPS-Oakland: “Our goal at LPS Oakland is to be nothing less than a high performing school in the city of Oakland, featuring high performing classrooms and high performing students. KWASI REED, DEAN OF STUDENT LIFE

Kwasi Reed is the Dean of Student Life for LPS Oakland. Mr. Reed has been an educator in the public school system for six years. He began his teaching career in the Compton Unified School District at Vanguard Learning Center where he taught seventh and eighth grade history and English. For the next three years, he taught in the Pomona Unified School District where he taught eighth grade history and journalism. In addition, he facilitated a mentoring program for young men. In 2003-2004, he taught history at LPS while also joining as a part-time Dean of Student Life. Mr. Reed served as Dean of Student Life at LPS Richmond, from 2005-2007. Mr. Reed holds a Bachelor of Science degree from California State University of San Bernardino, and a Master of Education from Claremont Graduate University.
