A message from the principal...

Welcome to LPS College Park, Home of the Knights!

I hope that everyone had a healthy, restful summer break and that our parents as well as our students are prepared to meet the challenges of the upcoming school year. I am looking forward to a year filled with meaningful learning experiences and memorable social activities.

As we enter into our 3rd year, we are focused on student achievement. Each department has created collaboratively goals and developed implementation steps for supporting student learning. We are helping our freshmen make the transition from middle school to high school by providing two hours of instruction in both English Language Arts and Mathematics. We are preparing our all of our students to pass the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) by offering intervention classes three times a week in English and Mathematics. All of our teachers are providing a rigorous curriculum that will prepare our students for state testing in the Spring. Our College Counselor, Mr. Juan Vera is meeting with each junior student this month to evaluate transcripts, determining student needs and to develop a plan for applying to colleges next year. Further, teacher professional development will emphasize learning strategies to meet the varied learning needs of all students and to truly support our English Language Learners.

In addition, LPS College Park is planning a variety of extracurricular activities and social events this year. We just held our Fall Spirit Week and Mexican Independence Day Celebration this past week. Already, 41 students have signed up for our soccer team; and we plan on having a girls’ and boys’ basketball team this year. Four school dances have been planned, with the first dance taking place on Friday, September 28th from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the Snow Building at the Oakland Zoo. We look forward to having a school newspaper as well as a yearbook. In addition, a Black College Tour and a California College Tour are scheduled for February and March, 2008!

We are excited about the new school year and truly want you to be a part of it. We need your support in making sure students are at school on time. We need your help in making sure that students are in the proper dress. We need your assistance in making sure that students are doing their homework.

In addition, we need school volunteers. We need class parents. We need office assistants. We need helpers during lunchtime and for after school supervision. We need so many people who have a heart for helping children learn, as well as seeing them through the rigors of the school day. In short—we need you. You don’t have to be an expert, we’ll train you! We welcome your involvement in this school with enthusiasm—and with a grateful heart was well. We need you, and we need you now. Simply contact our school office at 510-633-0750.

We look forward to a successful school year. We look forward to your involvement and support. And don’t forget to also come on out and join us for our annual Meet the Teachers Night, which will take place on Wednesday, September 26th at 6:00 p.m. See you then!
