All students participate in curriculum that ensures college eligibility and prepares them for college success.

Academics

PATIENCE

"Success comes to those who wait."

-Brent Chambers, Class of 2009,

Fresno State

The LPS academic philosophy is founded on three distinguishing characteristics: College Ready Curriculum, College Ready Supports, and a College Ready Culture.

Curriculum

Every class offered at LPS College Park is approved by the University of California and meets the UC-approved A-G curriculum. This means that the graduation requirements at LPS  College Park are equivalent to the entrance requirements for the University of California and the California State University system. All students who graduate from LPS College Park will be eligible for admission into UC and CSU schools.

A new addition to the LPS College Park curriculum is the College Launch Program. It is an onsite, community college freshmen program featuring online college courses and counseling resources for 11th and 12th graders. All current and incoming 9th graders will complete at least one online college course before graduation. Most will complete two or more courses. Current 10th graders will have the option of continuing through a first year of community college at the new LPS Oakland R&D Campus.

Academic Support

Each student at LPS College Park is guided by a personalized learning plan that supports the LPS college preparatory curriculum. LPS teachers and staff do frequent reviews of student performance to ensure that the students have access to after-school tutoring and literacy support classes. LPS also offers specialized support classes for English Learners and struggling readers. The LPS class size, which is 15-20% smaller than a typical high school, continues to provide a level of support not usually available to high school students in California.

College-Going Culture

Another new addition to the LPS College Park curriculum is the extensive use of technology. LPS College Park students are already using computers and hand-held "clickers" in math and reading. By Fall 2012, all 9th graders and many other students at the new LPS Oakland R&D Campus will have laptop computers in every class. Each student will track his or her own progress toward college by compiling an online, digital portfolio. This will include grades and test scores, course papers, and student-made videos documenting their community service activities and in-class projects. From the beginning, LPS College Park's vision has been to build future leaders with the skills and knowledge to make a difference in their communities.  Every single student at LPS College Park knows that by choosing to attend LPS, they have chosen to take a more difficult path than students at neighboring schools. They also are well aware that what makes LPS College Park different is our belief that every one of our students are someday bound for college.
