About LPS-San Jose

WASC VISIT

THE RIGHT CHOICE

"The small classes and one-on-one help from the teachers were awesome. I am going to miss LPS and encourage others to come." - Jessica Maciel

LPS-San José offers high school students the opportunity to study in a small school setting as they pursue their dream to attend college. Our public charter school approach combines rigorous academics, strong student support, and leadership training to create an environment where students can achieve their full potential and attend a college of their choice. Our focus allows students to build their strengths as leaders as they meet state testing and graduation standards. We strive to meet the needs of all students as they make their way to college and beyond.

Our History
Leadership Public Schools is a non-profit organization founded by Mark Kushner in 2002 to replicate the success of San Francisco’s Leadership High School.

Mr. Kushner founded San Francisco’s Leadership High School, a separate and distinct organization, in 1996. It was the first urban charter high school in California and among the most successful at serving inner city students. During Mr. Kushner’s tenure (1995-2002), Leadership High School sent 99% of its graduating students to college, achieved some of San Francisco’s highest Academic Performance Index (API) scores, and received the highest rankings possible for “similar schools” API scores (9 or 10 out of 10). Mr. Kushner’s vision was to replicate the success of the Leadership High School model via a network of outstanding charter high schools throughout California.

Today, the LPS network of outstanding public charter high schools are located in Richmond, Oakland, Hayward and San Jose and serve over 1,400 students. LPS is led by Dr. Louise Waters and supported by a board of directors and advisory board of experienced educators, business people, and community leaders. Our schools serve ethnically and economically diverse student bodies and are located in or near low-income urban neighborhoods. It is our mission to have 100% of LPS graduates meet the UC/CSU eligibility requirements and be accepted to college. LPS schools provide a caring and supportive environment in which every student is known and respected by the entire faculty and administration. High expectations are coupled with strong support, providing students with the motivation and resources to succeed.

Leadership Public Schools - San Jose has received unanimous charter renewals from its host district and celebrated a 100% college acceptance rate for its graduating class in both 2008 and 2009.
