FRESHMEN RETREAT
All incoming 9th graders have the opportunity to attend a three-day, free leadership retreat.
Q: Do you have sports teams at the school?
A: Baseball, Boys and Girls Basketball, Track-and-Field, and Boys and Girls Soccer.
Q: Do you have a dress code?
A: Yes. All students at LPS-San Jose will dress to the school uniform policy.
Dress Code: All clothing must be sized appropriately and students who choose not to follow the uniform policy will receive a call home and may not attend class until they are fully dressed according to this code. Loaner clothing will not be provided. If dressing out of uniform becomes a persistent problem for a student, other disciplinary actions may result.
Free Dress: When students are given the opportunity for free dress, the following rules must be followed. If students choose to disregard these rules, their opportunity to participate in free dress will be limited or taken away completely. Exceptions to the free dress rules may be made for dances or spirit days. Students will be given the specific dress code prior to the day of the event. If no special rules are given, students can assume they must follow the free dress guidelines above. Special circumstances may include: Halloween costumes, formal dresses that have small or no straps, particular theme or colored clothing, etc.
Q: What happens if you do not come in dress code?
A: Students who are not in dress code will be sent home to change and are expected to come back to school in dress code. If they are unable to go home, they serve an In-School Suspension.
Q: How many students are accepted each year?
A: We accept as many students as possible. If we are enrolled to capacity students are admitted by lottery.
Q: Can students leave campus for lunch?
A: Our school is a closed campus. Students are not allowed to leave the school at any time during the school day without permission from their parents.
Q: Will there be P.E.?
A: Because LPS-San Jose is a charter school we are not required to have P.E. The Federal Government, however, requires a physical fitness test to be given to all students at the end of their freshman year. LPS-San Jose does however have an excellent Martial Arts program that incorporates intense physical activity that is open to all students.
Q: Is community service required?
A: 140 hours are required to graduate or 35 hours per year a student has attended (e.g. If a student transferred in during their sophomore year, they are required to do 105 community service hours).
Q: Are there dances?
A: Yes. Check the calendar for dates and details.
Q: What is the school lunch like?
A: We receive our lunches from Revolution Foods which sources their food from Whole Foods. This means we specialize in organic, healthy, and low-fat/low sugar items that still taste good. Some of our most popular items are Chicken Tamales, Chicken Teriyaki and a wide assortment of fresh salads.
Q: How many students are in each class?
A: A majority of our classes range from 23 to 26 students. Although we have a few larger classes, we also have some very small classes – as low as eight students to provide an excellent teacher-to-student ratio.
Q: What language classes are available?
A: Spanish and Spanish for Native Speakers.
Q: How does the school help students apply for college?
A: In Leadership Advisory, students have the opportunity to write their college applications and essays. We offer extracurricular activities that can be put on college applications, such as leading school activities and peer tutoring. We are also have a college counselor that will help students select the right colleges for them and ensure they are prepared to apply.
Q: How does the school address safety on campus?
A: LPS-San Jose is a very small community where everyone knows each other. The students and staff develop strong relationships with each other, which leads to openness to discuss problems on campus. Students have the ability to call out peers for negative behavior during the family meetings and staff meet one on one with students when they notice conflict between peers. With this type of personal attention on campus there have not been many safety concerns over the last four years. When problems arise, they are dealt with quickly and carefully by our Dean of Students with appropriate consequences.
Q: Does your school accept student with IEPs?
A: Because we are a public school we are open to all students, including those with IEPs. We have fantastic RSP teachers here on campus that work in class with our students who have IEPs.
Q: How do we go about enrolling as upperclassmen?
A: Transfer students must submit a transcript along with their application. This allows us to discuss what classes they would need to take in order to graduate from our school. They will be part of a separate lottery that fills open spots in the school. This lottery happens in March.
Q: What electives does your school offer?
A: We offer Spanish, Art, Introduction to Technology, Yearbook, Journalism and more! Check our course page for more information.
