"Be a part of something and always think positive! Your life is what you make of it." - Alexander Nguyen
FRESHMEN RETREAT
All incoming 9th graders have the opportunity to attend a three-day, free retreat at Stanford University.
Over the last few years, we have seen hundreds freshman enroll at our school. These students come from across Santa Clara County and have a number of characteristics in common. In general, our incoming students need targeted support in math and English. To meet these needs, we created the Freshman Academy.
The first component to our Freshmen Academy is Academic Leadership. This course teaches students ELA learning strategies and study skills. This course helps students develop expository writing and note taking skills and helps teachers identify and track student performance over the 9th grade year. The second part of our Freshmen Academy is Earth Systems & Integrated Science. This course teaches students how make observations, gather data and participate in a science lab activities.
The final component to our Freshmen Academy is Numeracy. This course is taught in conjunction with the Algebra I class that all Freshmen take. This course helps students review the basic math and Algebra skills that will be covered in Algebra I. This course also allows math teachers to identify students who are struggling in math and to help direct additional resources to them.
